Professional Opportunity: Middle School History Teacher/ Student Council-Yearbook Coordinator 07-08

This position will be a full-time, regular faculty appointment starting in late August 2007. The position requires standing/sitting, walking to other parts of campus, and occasional travel. 

 

Responsibilities. This position comprises .75 FTE as Middle School history teacher and .25 as the division's Student Council advisor and yearbook coordinator. As a Middle School history teacher, the person will join a collaborative department that has significantly reworked its core curriculum and electives to emphasize global perspectives and world cultures. The 5th-grade social studies curriculum focuses on the Pacific Rim's western shores; 6th-grade curriculum extends Pacific Rim studies to Asia; 7th-grade curriculum combines a rigorous survey of U.S. history and a contemporary issues-based approach to the subject; and the 8th-grade curriculum (the first year of a three-year sequence in world history) treats the development and diffusion of civilization and looks at human history against the backdrop of physical geography. This position's assignment will be teaching required courses in 7th-grade U.S. history. Essential duties for Lakeside faculty members include (1) classroom instruction informed by collaboration with the department's other teachers; (2) conferences with students and colleagues; (3) active participation in the department's work on curriculum development and pedagogy; (4) acting as an academic advisor to a group of students; and (5) assuming at least one additional duty as a faculty member (advising a student club, joining a standing committee, and the like).

 

Qualifications. The successful applicant will have at least a bachelor's degree in history; a master's in history or a related field (ethnic studies, sociology, political science, international studies) is preferred. Significant course work in interdisciplinary studies focusing on the humanities or history of a particular world region will be of particular interest. Experience in teaching middle-school-aged students is preferred, though those whose teaching has focused on early high-school years are also encouraged to apply. Previous experience supervising student government, student council, or other student leadership activities is desired, as is previous experience with all facets of school yearbook production. Familiarity with computers and an interest in curricular technology integration is essential (PC/Windows platform). The candidate must be able to work with students varying in ability and learning styles, both nurturing and challenging as necessary, and have experience instructing diverse student populations. References should speak to a candidate's ability to be a dynamic educator; to his/her eagerness/enthusiasm for working effectively with capable young people; and to his/her ability to work harmoniously, competently, and respectfully with adult colleagues.
