Professional Opportunity: Upper School Spanish Teacher 07-08

Lakeside School is an independent coeducational day school offering a broad curriculum in the liberal arts. Founded in 1919, the school enrolls 776 students in grades 5 through 12 from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds.

The mission of Lakeside School is to develop in intellectually capable young people the creative minds, healthy bodies, and ethical spirits needed to contribute wisdom, compassion, and leadership to a global society. We provide a rigorous, dynamic academic program through which effective educators lead students to take responsibility for learning. We are committed to sustaining a school in which individuals representing diverse cultures and experiences instruct one another in the meaning and value of community and in the joy and importance of lifelong learning.

This will be a full-time, regular faculty appointment beginning in late August 2007. The position requires standing/sitting, walking to other parts of campus, and occasional travel.

Responsibilities. The languages curriculum at Lakeside School provides students with four (or potent-ially five, depending upon student interest and sign-ups) years of study in Spanish. Latin, Chinese and French are also taught through the fifth year. The Upper School Spanish teacher will instruct high-school students in Spanish, with an emphasis on building oral proficiency, promoting students' ability to read and write in the language, and exploring the diverse culture and rich history of the Spanish-speaking world. The specific level of language instruction will be determined based on course enrollment, department preference, and department members' individual background and training. Essential duties for faculty members at Lakeside include 1) classroom instruction; 2) conferences with students and colleagues; 3) active participation in the work of the Languages Department on curriculum development and pedagogy; 4) acting as an academic adviser to a group of students; and 5) assuming at least one additional duty as a faculty member (advising a student club, joining a standing committee, and the like).

Qualifications. The successful applicant will have at least a bachelor's degree in Spanish; a master's degree is preferred. Experience in teaching high-school-aged students is preferred, though those whose teaching has focused on advanced middle schoolers or the early college years are also encouraged to apply. The ability to teach another of our offered languages is an asset. The successful candidate will preferably have had living experience in a Spanish-speaking country, and will have computer literacy and proficiency. References should speak to an applicant's ability to be a dynamic educator with leadership potential; to be an effective, supportive mentor for adolescents; and to work effectively and harmoniously with adult colleagues.

Salary/Benefits. Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding employees through a compensation plan that compares favorably with those of peer schools both locally and nationwide. Individual salary levels-negotiable depending on education and experience-are very competitive. A full benefits package includes TIAA/CREF retirement and generous medical/dental coverage, and equals the best plans in private industry. Lakeside's down-payment assistance program (available after successful evaluation) supports first-time home purchases in the Puget Sound area.

Application Process. Applicants should call 206/440-2763 to request an application form or download a form from the Lakeside School web site (www.lakesideschool.org), and should submit this with a resumé and cover letter of interest to Lakeside School Employment, 14050 First Avenue NE, Seattle, Washington, 98125-3099.
