Professional Opportunity: Upper School Latin Teacher 07-08

Lakeside School is an independent coeducational day school offering a broad curriculum in the liberal arts. Founded in 1919, the school enrolls 776 students in grades 5 through 12 from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds.

The mission of Lakeside School is to develop in intellectually capable young people the creative minds, healthy bodies, and ethical spirits needed to contribute wisdom, compassion, and leadership to a global society. We provide a rigorous, dynamic academic program through which effective educators lead students to take responsibility for learning. We are committed to sustaining a school in which individuals representing diverse cultures and experiences instruct one another in the meaning and value of community and in the joy and importance of lifelong learning.

This position is a regular, part-time (.75 FTE) faculty appointment, beginning in late August 2007. The position requires sitting, standing, walking to other parts of campus, and repetitive computer work.

Responsibilities. The Upper School Latin teacher will be primarily responsible for instructing high-school students in Latin. The professional context is the Lakeside School Languages Department, which offers courses in Chinese, French, Latin, and Spanish. Formal language study for Middle School students typically begins in 6th or 7th grade and continues into high school, as the graduation requirement for foreign language study is "through the third level of the language" at the Upper School. The Upper and Middle school Latin teachers are responsible for coordinating their curricula and course content so that Latin students can move seamlessly from middle- to high-school instruction. The teacher will enable Upper School Latin students (1) to develop proficiency in the essential elements of the language, including fluency in reading and writing; (2) depending on level, to have the opportunity to read and analyze Roman authors in a range of genres (e.g., Caesar, Cicero, Sallust); (3) to learn about the major influence that Latin and Greek have had on English, including word study, etymology, and vocabulary building; and (4) to understand the historical context (Rome, the empire, the ancient and medieval worlds) within which Latin flourished as a language. Essential duties for part-time faculty members at Lakeside include (1) classroom instruction; (2) conferences with students and colleagues; and (3) active participation in the work of the department on curriculum develop-ment and pedagogy. Part-time teachers are also encouraged to select an additional faculty duty (advising a student club, joining a standing committee, and the like) and to play an active role in Lakeside's community.

Qualifications. The successful applicant will have a bachelor's degree with a major in Latin; a master's degree in Latin or in education is preferred. An educational background that includes some study of ancient history-primarily Roman-as well as ancient Greek or classical civilization will be preferred. Candidates should have had successful experience teaching high-school students. Computer literacy and proficiency (PC/Windows platform) are required, and we will give preference to candidates who are actively using technology to deliver course material and support effective pedagogy. References should speak to an applicant's ability to be a dynamic educator with leadership potential; to be an effective, supportive mentor for adolescents; and to work effectively and harmoniously with adult colleagues.

Salary/Benefits. Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding employees through a compensation plan that compares favorably with those of peer schools both locally and nationwide. Individual salary levels-negotiable depending on education and experience-are very competitive. A full benefits package includes TIAA/CREF retirement and generous medical/dental coverage, and equals the best plans in private industry.

Application Process. Applicants should call 206/440-2763 to request an application form or should download an application form from www.lakesideschool.org <http://www.lakesideschool.org/> , and should submit this with a resumé to Lakeside School Employmentr, Lakeside School, 14050 First Avenue NE, Seattle, Washington 98125-3099.
