Professional Opportunity: Upper School Language Teacher (Mandarin Chinese) 07-08
Lakeside School is an independent coeducational day school offering a broad curriculum in the liberal arts. Founded in 1919, the school enrolls 776 students in grades 5 through 12 from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds.
The mission of Lakeside School is to develop in intellectually capable young people the creative minds, healthy bodies, and ethical spirits needed to contribute wisdom, compassion, and leadership to a global society. We provide a rigorous, dynamic academic program through which effective educators lead students to take responsibility for learning. We are committed to sustaining a school in which individuals representing diverse cultures and experiences instruct one another in the meaning and value of community and in the joy and importance of lifelong learning.
This will be a regular, part-time faculty appointment, beginning in August 2007.
Responsibilities. The foreign language curriculum at Lakeside School’s Upper School provides students with five years of study in Chinese, French, Latin, and Spanish; the same languages are taught in the Middle School in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in courses equivalent to a half-year of high-school instruction. Lakeside’s Chinese program will be in its eighth year in 2007-2008, and the teacher will have the opportunity to help to build the program with the addition of fifth-year instruction to the existing Upper School Chinese I‑IV courses. The FTE will depend upon student enrollment, but it is anticipated that it will be most likely half time. Essential duties will include (1) classroom instruction, with an emphasis on building oral proficiency, promoting students’ ability to read and write in the language, and exploring the culture and history of China; (2) conferences with students and colleagues; (3) active participation in the work of the Languages Department on curriculum development and pedagogy; and (4) active participation in the life of the school community.
Qualifications. The successful applicant will have at least a bachelor’s degree in Chinese, with a master’s in the language or in education preferred. A minor in a second language, particularly one already taught at Lakeside, will be an advantage. Some teaching experience at the high-school or late middle-school level is essential. The successful candidate will preferably have had experience living in China or in a Chinese-speaking community, and will have computer literacy and proficiency on a PC platform. References should speak to an applicant’s ability to be a dynamic educator and mentor for adolescents and to work effectively and harmoniously with adult colleagues.
Salary/Benefits. Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding employees through a compensation plan that compares favorably with those of peer schools both locally and nationwide. Individual salary levels—negotiable depending on education and experience—are very competitive. A full benefits package includes TIAA/CREF retirement and generous medical/dental coverage, and equals the best plans in private industry. Lakeside’s down-payment assistance program (available after successful evaluation) supports first-time home purchases in the Puget Sound area.
Application Process. Applicants should call 206/440-2763 to request an application form or download a form from the Lakeside School Web site (www.lakesideschool.org), and should submit this with a resumé and cover letter of interest to Lakeside School Employment, 14050 First Avenue NE, Seattle, Washington, 98125-3099. This position will be open until filled. Lakeside School is an Equal Opportunity Employer seeking to diversify its workplace.
