The University of Washington invites nominations and applications for the
position of Vice President for Minority Affairs and Vice Provost for
Diversity. This is the chief diversity officer of the University. We seek an
individual with the drive and creativity to maintain and expand our national
leadership in this area.

Founded in 1861, the University of Washington is one of the nation's premier
research-oriented public universities. For each of the past 30 years, the
University has led the nation's public research universities in competing for
federal support for research and training. With campuses in Bothell, Seattle,
and Tacoma, the University of Washington enrolls 43,000 students in a
comprehensive array of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs.

The University of Washington considers diversity as a university-wide
responsibility and core value. The vice president/vice provost is part of the
executive leadership team and advises the president and the provost on policies
and actions that reflect the core values of the University. In collaboration
with the provost, deans, chancellors, and vice presidents, the vice president/
vice provost provides leadership and coordination of diversity planning to
ensure success for diversity initiatives.

The vice president/vice provost directs the Office of Minority Affairs (OMA).
Established in 1968, OMA is invested with the responsibility for ensuring
diversity at the undergraduate level through its programs of K-12 outreach and
recruitment, student counseling, instructional assistance, graduate and
professional school preparation, and the activities and programs of its Ethnic
Cultural Center. OMA has a state–funded annual budget of $5 million and annual
private donations and grants of approximately $12 million. The vice president/
vice provost also leads the University's efforts to be a national leader in the
development of a diverse campus community, which includes ensuring a diverse
student body, faculty and staff, and a vibrant, inclusive, rich intellectual
environment. The vice president/vice provost reports directly to the president
and provost.

We seek a person with senior leadership experience who has an entrepreneurial
approach to program development related to diversity initiatives and thrives in
a collaborative environment. Competitive candidates will have a good record of
developing and sustaining relationships with students, faculty, staff and
community leaders, government and foundation officials, and other relevant
constituent groups. Candidates should have demonstrated budgetary management
ability, and a record of grant writing success is desirable. An advanced
degree is strongly preferred.
