Program: The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education
Eligibility: The following criteria will be used in selecting the
recipients of the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education.
The 2007 McGraw Prize in Education will celebrate the theme of global
awareness in U.S. education.
Nominations should showcase the people behind educational programs
that help students develop the knowledge and skills they will need to
function as workers, citizens and fulfilled individuals in an
increasingly interconnected world.
Nominees can include researchers, practitioners, policy makers or
others who have established themselves as significant innovators in
helping American schools and colleges adapt to the new global
environment.
Three Prize winners will be chosen to honor outstanding individuals
who have provided leadership in each of three categories:
-- Policy Makers—Individuals working at all levels — local, state,
national or even international – who have grasped the importance of a
global education, shown how it can be incorporated into instruction or
built into public awareness. Candidates might be governors, state
superintendents, mayors, state legislators, leaders of non-profit
organizations, academics or others who have successfully championed
the cause of global awareness.
-- Higher Education—Leaders such as university presidents or deans of
education, who have provided leadership in promoting global awareness.
-- School-Based Personnel—Teachers, principals, curriculum specialists
or others who have introduced global awareness into primary and
secondary schools, promoted partnerships with schools in other
countries, or organized teaching of foreign languages.
Purpose: The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education annually
recognizes outstanding individuals who have dedicated themselves to
improving education in this country and whose accomplishments are
making a difference today. Honorees are chosen by a distinguished
panel of judges made up of thoughtful and influential members of the
education community. Each winner receives a gift of $25,000 and a
bronze sculpture. The Prize was established in 1988 to honor Mr.
McGraw's lifelong commitment to education, and to mark the
Corporation's 100th anniversary.
