Assistant Professor of Multicultural Education

The College of Professional Studies seeks energetic and innovative faculty
who are committed to excellence in teaching and learning, community service,
and scholarship. The College, one of four academic colleges on campus,
houses the School of Education, the Health, Human Services, and Public
Policy Department, the Human Performance and Wellness Education Department,
and the School of Business.
The Liberal Studies Department, directly under the School of Education, is
home to an outcomes-based interdisciplinary major, preparing students to
enter Teaching Credential programs. Ninety percent of our current Liberal
Studies majors intend to become elementary school teachers. Our curriculum
meets the State of California approved subject matter pre-requisite for the
fifth-year of study in a Multiple Subjects Credential Program, and there is
an Integrated Undergraduate and Teaching Credential program. We also prepare
students for entry-level positions and graduate programs in other
professions, such as informal education, counseling, and other
education-related courses that value well-rounded general undergraduate
preparation. Liberal Studies is the second largest major on campus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the
following:
This faculty member will be the primary instructor of Multicultural
Children's Literature course sections and heavily involved in the management
and supervision of Service Learning activities related to this course and
others. Additional course assignments may include Culture and Cultural
Diversity, Applied Linguistics, Social Foundations of Education, and Major
ProSeminar and/or Senior Capstone, depending on content expertise. This
individual will also advise undergraduate students, guide the development of
their academic learning plans, participate in the development of an
outcomes-based curricula, support online approaches to curriculum design and
instruction, write and contribute to scholarly work, act as a liaison
between the department and community partners, seek grants or other sources
of funding to support innovative university projects, and serve on
university and department committees, and other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Earned doctorate in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Social
Foundations of Education, Early Literacy/Children's Literature,
Multicultural Education, or a related field. ABD will be considered;
University teaching experience at or equivalent to at least the assistant
rank;
Evidence of excellence in teaching;
Evidence of research experience and potential;
Expertise in interdisciplinary, multicultural perspectives;
Demonstrated experience in teaching students in culturally and
linguistically diverse academic settings;
Sensitivity to and demonstrated interest in, teaching students from
nontraditional and ethnically diverse backgrounds;
Demonstrated ability to integrate intellectual and experiential learning
through service learning methodology in educational and/or community
settings.
Experience with K-12 teaching, curriculum, and/or subject matter preparation
The minimum requirement for appointment to a tenure track position is an
earned doctorate appropriate to the position. Candidates nearing completion
of the doctorate may be considered for an appointment to a lectureship
(temporary position). Subsequent conversion to a probationary position may
be considered if the doctoral is completed prior to the end of the
lectureship position.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to integrate broad-based, liberal learning and Education; ability to
teach own content expertise and relate to K-12 teaching or other
professional arenas; online teaching experience and technology skills;
experience and interest in innovative education; experience implementing
service learning projects; proficiency in a second language and experience
in bilingual or multilingual contexts; a working understanding of, or
equivalent experience in the diverse communities which comprise the Monterey
Bay and tri-county region.
