WestEd, a nonprofit research, development, and service agency, works 
with education and other communities to promote excellence, achieve 
equity, and improve learning for children, youth, and adults. While 
WestEd serves the states of Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah as one 
of the nation's Regional Educational Laboratories, our agency's work 
extends throughout the United States and abroad. WestEd has 14 offices 
nationwide, from Washington and Boston to Arizona, Southern California,

The Information Services Group manages the selection, acquisition, and 
development of software and other digital media for staff and clients. 
We offer referral, consultation, research, and development services to 
WestEd programs and projects as well as to external clients. Our areas 
of work include Web-based applications, database development and 
maintenance; and other digital media, e.g., document development, 
content management, CD-ROM and video.

Position Description
The Interactive Application Developer will develop and support 
database-driven web applications using open source software while 
working in a team environment.

The successful applicant will be based in the Bay Area.

Responsibilities
* Develop and maintain complex interactive applications.
* Work closely with team members to ensure overall quality and integrity 
of web-based interactive applications.
* Help build a learning environment that promotes the sharing of 
knowledge and skills between team members, consultants, and other WestEd 
staff through instructional workshops and study groups.

Qualifications
* Strong experience with database-driven web application development 
using Perl, knowledge of MVC principles, and object-oriented Perl is 
required.
* Knowledge of HTML/XHTML and web standards and a good understanding of 
CSS is required.
* Comfort with development on Unix-like operating systems such as Linux 
and Solaris is required.
* Basic knowledge of JavaScript is required; experience with 
asynchronous client-side scripting (AJAX) strongly preferred.
* Expertise writing and optimizing SQL queries required; experience with 
MySQL preferred.
* Experience with Ruby on Rails, PHP, Python, XML/XSLT and/or Web 
Services preferred.
* Firm understanding of web application security, including XSS, XSRF 
and SQL injection vulnerabilities a plus.
* Experience with automated testing and version control a plus.
* Desire to learn new technologies and keep current with technological 
trends.
* Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle changing 
priorities and multiple tasks simultaneously.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate 
effectively with clients and develop a clear understanding of their needs.
* Reliability, a professional attitude, and a willingness to do what is 
required in a cooperative work setting.
