JOB SUMMARY
The Pacific Comprehensive Assistance Center (Pacific Center) supports
and assists states, school districts, and schools in meeting the needs
of children served under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as
amended, in order to ensure that all students meet high academic
standards.
The Equity Center serves Region X which includes the Pacific regions of
American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam,
Hawaii, and Palau. The Equity Center is one of 10 regional equity
assistance centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education to assist
schools in the areas of national origin, race, and gender equity. The
Specialist will be based at PREL in Honolulu, HI.
JOB DUTIES
Essential Duties/Functions:
* Plan, design, coordinate and deliver research-based technical
assistance services to Pacific region entities in Region X, including
workshops, conferences, and institutes to maintain and enhance
educational equity and school reform, targeting educators, parents, and
communities.
* Provide training and technical assistance in a range of school
reform and improvement areas, with special emphasis on Special Needs
students and English Language Learners.
* Assist schools in promoting educational equity by advancing
access to qualified teachers, quality instruction, and challenging
curricula, to help students meet high academic standards. Ensure
students and parents have equitable access to charter schools and other
school options.
* Participate with training teams to research, design, develop,
and implement training materials and programs for current and evolving
needs of clients and communities. Collaborate in the production of
quality, research-based products on educational equity and school reform
to meet the needs of the Pacific region.
* Develop and disseminate research-based information on school
reform and improvement needs through presentations, training/technical
assistance, telephone consultations, teleconferences, listserves,
articles, and mailings.
* Participate in program evaluations; contribute to the
development of proposals, and be sensitive to marketing opportunities to
promote PREL and NWREL Equity Center services nationally and regionally.
Other duties:
* Perform all other duties as assigned.
JOB CONDITIONS
Working Conditions:
PREL's contract environment requires the ability to effectively plan and
meet short timelines and changing conditions. Strong staff and partner
collaboration in work assignments is a standard at PREL.
Days/Hours of Work:
Office open hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is
a regular, full-time, exempt position and, as such, will be required to
work additional hours as called up on to accomplish assigned tasks.
Physical Demands:
Occasionally requires lifting items up to 30 pounds.
Communication Demands:
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Requires communication with staff, between PREL departments, and with
PREL clients and contractors.
QUALIFICATIONS
Skills/Knowledge:
* Demonstrated knowledge of and relevant work in current
research and practice in school reform and improvement, and educational
equity.
* Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, particularly in
working with diverse Pacific cultures or in a multicultural setting.
* Proven ability to work as a member of a team and to foster
team spirit and professionalism within a learning community.
Education/Training:
* Master's degree in Special Education, ESL, ELL or a related
field. Equivalent work experience in a K-12 educational system may also
be considered.
Experience:
* Minimum of five years successful experience working with
schools and/or other educational systems or related organizations in
teaching and administrative roles. Direct experience in Special
Education and ELL education required.
* Extensive experience and demonstrated skills providing
training and technical assistance in school reform and improvement,
educational equity. SIOP training qualifications highly desirable.
Other qualifiers:
* Ability to travel by air and spend extended periods of time in
the field.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Position is located in our Honolulu office and is available immediately
through 2007 and beyond, subject to terms of employment, job performance
and/or continued funding.
Employment is "at will" and can be terminated at any time, either by the
employee or PREL, with or without cause or reason and with or without
notice.
