Hello, all. My university, Hamline University, in St. Paul, MN, is seeking
a new dean of the Graduate School of Education. One of the four pillars of
the School's shared vision is "Advocating Pluralism, Equity, and Social
Justice in Schools and Society."

Please send this to whoever might be seeking such a position, or apply
yourself! (But only send it to nice people, because whoever is hired will
be my boss. Just kidding, sort of.)

Position Announcement: DEAN of the GRADUATE SCHOOL of EDUCATION

Hamline University invites nominations and applications for the position
of dean of the Graduate School of Education. Hamline seeks a creative,
energetic, and respected educational leader to build on the considerable
strengths and opportunities of the university’s largest graduate school.

THE UNIVERSITY
Founded by Methodist pioneers in 1854 as the first institution of higher
education in Minnesota, Hamline is a high-quality, nationally ranked,
comprehensive university with more than 4,400 degree-seeking students in
its undergraduate college, law school, and graduate schools. Ranked first
in quality among master’s universities in Minnesota by U.S. News and World
Report, Hamline's mission is to create a diverse and collaborative
community of learners dedicated to the development of students' knowledge,
values, and skills for successful lives of leadership, scholarship, and
service. Hamline has new leadership, with the appointment of President
Linda N. Hanson in 2005 and of Vice President of Academic and Student
Affairs David S. Stern in 2006, who are leading a strategic planning
process for Hamline’s future. Located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, one of the
nation’s most attractive academic urban centers, Hamline offers a
collegial campus culture characterized by the cooperative engagement of
faculty and administration.

THE GRADUATE SCHOOL of EDUCATION
Hamline’s Graduate School of Education (GSE) has a thirty-year history of
providing coursework tailored to meet the needs of local and regional
educators. Re-accredited by NCATE in 2005, GSE enrolls approximately 1,000
degree-seeking and more than 7,000 continuing education students annually.
GSE offers the following degrees: master of arts in education (MAEd); MAEd
in natural science and environmental education; master of arts in English
as a second language; master of arts in teaching; and doctorate in
education; as well as graduate continuing studies and additional licensure
programs. The GSE houses several centers positioned on the forefront of
educational theory and practice: Center for Global Environment Education;
Center for Second Language Teaching and Learning; Center for Excellence in
Urban Teaching, and the Center for Literacy and Learning. The school seeks
a dean who can join Hamline’s leadership team and lead faculty and staff
in achieving new levels of prominence and success.

THE DEAN
The dean oversees the Graduate School of Education’s academic and related
programs as well as the recruitment and retention of students, faculty and
staff; administers school and university policies; helps to secure and to
manage the school’s fiscal resources, and participates with other
university administrators in governance, strategic planning, and
institutional assessment. The dean works collaboratively with Deans’
Council, and reports directly to the vice president for academic and
student affairs.

The ideal candidate will have: a demonstrated record of leadership as a
professional educator; experience in personnel and program management,
including program evaluation, creation, and marketing; familiarity with
P-12 public education as well as post-secondary education; communication
and interpersonal skills that translate into effective advocacy for the
school's programs within and outside the university; commitment to urban
education; evidence of advocacy and programmatic accomplishments in
supporting the value of diversity and equity in education; and a
leadership style that is visionary, entrepreneurial, and collaborative.
Fundraising, multiple location administration, and experience with online
education are desirable. The candidate's qualifications must include an
earned doctorate and a record of teaching, service, and professional
development appropriate to a senior faculty appointment in the school.
