Kum Tux Hiyu (Understands a Lot) in the Chinook Trade Jargon, is a
professional development grant from the United States Department of
Education, Office of Indian Education.
The goal of the grant is to support 23 American Indian students in the
School of Education Initial Licensure programs over a four year
period. Upon completion of their initial licensure program,
participants will earn a Masters of Arts in Teaching and effectively
double the current number of American Indian teachers in the State of
Oregon. The grant will set up a model for American Indian teacher
training that could be replicated throughout the country.
Southern Oregon University is one of sixteen successful grants
nationwide, and one of two in Oregon, with Lewis and Clark College
being the other. The grant period is four years and will provide full
tuition, monthly stipends, and book fees for full-time graduate
students in the School of Education initial teacher licensure program.
Southern Oregon University is excited for this opportunity to further
our relationships and commitments with the sovereign Nations and
tribal peoples within the region that we serve, through the
facilitation of this program.
