Great Tribal Leaders of Modern Times

http://www.lclark.edu/dept/ccps/triballeaders08.html

Powerful personal stories bring themes alive in this seminar that
spans the fields of political science, American history, Native
American studies, multicultural studies, and sociology. This series,
based on videotaped interviews, focuses on contemporary American
Indian tribal leaders from across the country who have worked to
preserve tribal self-determination and governance, treaty rights, and
Indian tribes' constitutionally protected status as inherent sovereign
governments.

These leaders speak of federal policies that altered and often
destroyed tribal identities, such as those of relocation, removal,
termination, and assimilation eras. They tell compelling stories about
the tactics, strategies, and perseverance that were required to
prevent erosion of tribal identity and autonomy.

Contemporary leaders have been on the front lines in Congress, in
state and local governments, in colleges, on reservations, and in
boardrooms. They have amassed power to improve the lives of Native
people by forming coalitions with non-Native groups, with reservation
neighbors, and sometimes with former adversaries. There are more than
550 federally recognized Indian tribes in the United States. Their
continuing survival and resilience is a little-known aspect of recent
American history.

During each session, participants view, reflect upon, and discuss
several videos.
