(NAME-MCE) (NAME -MCE) Right to Vote sent Tue 11, Dec 2007 from Debra Johnson-Jones

Hello,

I have seen this email floating around for a couple of years now, if not longer. Has action been taken in regards to the content? Do we know if this is even true or if it is urban legend?

According to the site below, this email is not valid:
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/pending/voting.asp

This site explains that the right to vote was given to all citizens of age 21 by the 15th amendment. Ninety-five years later President Lyndon B. Johnson proposed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to ensure that all citizens could carry out the right to vote. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is the piece that will expire this year. This site has a hyperlink to the federal government site of the Voting Rights Act Clarification.

I have learned that dialogue without action should not happen. We should not just speak or blow our horns without putting some action behind it (just a phrase, please do not take offense). We should not act before talking it out with one another to get a rich and fuller knowledge base about the subject. I learned this from reading Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire (2000) thanks to my University of Illinois instructor, Dr. Jennifer Herring.

Carry on and have Faith in our nation.

During December we recall numerous world events: Napoleon's 1804 coronation; the Wright Brothers' first powered flight; the first performance of "Peter Pan" (in 1904) and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Learn the details of those, and other events, in this summary of December Highlights.

Also in this month's issue is a story about the real St Nicholas, born in Patara (today's Turkey) in the third century. And ... take a virtual trip to the national archives to see President Roosevelt's declaration-of-war manuscript. ("Infamy" was not included in the first draft of his famous speech.)

Misinformation about the Voting Rights Act and the constitutional amendment
addressing race and the right to vote (15th Amendment) has been circulating
for months.

Here's a quick cut and paste from the US DOJ website addressing the VRA and
the 15th Amendment.

The Voting Rights Act, adopted initially in 1965 and extended in 1970, 1975,
and 1982, is generally considered the most successful piece of civil rights
legislation ever adopted by the United States Congress. The Act codifies and
effectuates the 15th Amendment's permanent guarantee that, throughout the
nation, no person shall be denied the right to vote on account of race or
color. In addition, the Act contains several special provisions that impose
even more stringent requirements in certain jurisdictions throughout the
country.
