The University of Oregon, a comprehensive, public, liberal arts, research
university, seeks applications and nominations for Dean of the College of
Education. The University of Oregon is one of 34 public institutions of
higher education that are members of the Association of American
Universities and a founding member of the Association of Pacific Rim
Universities.

The University of Oregon, College of Education offers degree programs in the
areas of Counseling Psychology and Human Services, Educational Leadership,
Special Education, and Teacher Education. The College of Education is home
to nine research centers and eight outreach centers. Almost 800
undergraduate majors, and over 650 graduate students, interact with 40
tenure track and research associate faculty. The College of Education is an
inclusive learning community committed to fulfilling our mission of making
educational and social systems work for all. According to the U.S. News &
World Report 2007-8 edition of "America's Best Graduate Schools," the
College of Education ranks among the top ten public graduate institutions of
education in the nation for the sixth year in a row, placing sixth among all
publics and 12th among public and private institutions. For the eighth
consecutive year, the UO special education program is ranked third in the
nation. For the past six years the University of Oregon education faculty
have placed in the top three for funded research per faculty member
generating an average of $25 million in external funding -- approximately
$625,000 per faculty member. More than 6,413 schools in all 50 states
utilize the research and outreach services of College of Education faculty.
A new state-of-the-art building dedicated to the College of Education has
been designed and is in the early stages of construction.

The college collaborates closely with the College of Arts and Sciences as
well as five professional schools all characterized by their liberal arts
foundations: the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, Lundquist College
of Business, School of Journalism and Communication, School of Law, and
School of Music and Dance.

The Dean serves as academic leader and chief executive of the college and
reports directly to the Provost. The Dean sits on the Deans' Working Group,
a small academic policy formation group, and the Leadership Council, a
larger university management organization. The Dean is responsible for
providing leadership and management for faculty, staff, and students in
establishing and achieving the college's goals. These responsibilities
include:

* guiding the formulation and implementation of the College's strategic
vision

* building consensus for advancing academic quality and programmatic
priorities

* hiring and retaining excellent faculty representing a wide array of
disciplines and scholarly interests.

* Advancing the college's efforts to create an educational environment
supportive of staff, students, and faculty inclusive of race, culture,
(dis)ability, gender, sexuality, and/or religion.

* supporting faculty research and the advancement of knowledge

* furthering academic excellence in undergraduate and graduate education

* leading the college's development and fundraising agenda, and creating
strategies to enhance college resources that support the mission of the
College

* facilitating collaborative relationships with the public school systems
and agencies serving children and families in the community and region

We seek a Dean who:

* has demonstrated strategic leadership in a complex organization or
academic setting

* possesses an earned doctorate with a distinguished record of academic
achievements and a record of scholarship, teaching, and service that
warrants appointment at the rank of professor within the college

* has the ability to represent all areas of the college

* has demonstrated commitment to high quality research, excellence in
teaching, and promoting justice in educational settings

* has experience with budget policy in a large organizational context

* has the experience and/or aptitude and commitment to enable successful
advocacy and fundraising on behalf of the college

* will be committed to recruiting and supporting culturally diverse staff,
faculty, and students

* will support and enhance the College's efforts to create programs whose
graduates are able to competently serve the needs of culturally,
linguistically, economically, racially, sexually, physically, and mentally
diverse populations

* has demonstrated the ability to lead in a collaborative or collegial
manner within a large and complex organizational environment with diverse
populations

* has demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills


Beyond its tradition of academic excellence and a commitment to liberal arts
education, the University of Oregon and its environs offer one of the finest
work-life balances of any major university. The 295 acre campus is located
in Eugene, a city noted for quality of life, arts, and the outdoors. Eugene
is nestled within the Willamette Valley an hour from the Pacific to the west
and the Cascade Mountains to the east. The climate is sunny and with low
humidity in the summer and mild in the winter. Eugene is the home for a
number of high quality music, drama, and arts organizations including the
world-renowned Oregon Bach Festival.

Eugene Oregon is a city (population 140,395), that balances affordability

Cascade mountain range, Eugene is often listed among the most livable
communities in the country, and is considered to be an excellent place to
raise a family. It is a two-hour drive to Portland, the state's major
metropolitan area, or to Bend, the state's fastest growing city and a
popular mountain resort area.
