Clarkson University
Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity Initiatives
Clarkson University is a private, nationally ranked research institution
aligned with the global marketplace. Located near the foothills of the
Adirondack Mountains in Potsdam, NY, the University enrolls 3,000
high-ability undergraduate and graduate students who thrive in rigorous
programs in business, engineering, health sciences, liberal arts, and
science. Through comprehensive industry partnerships and a
boundary-spanning approach to collaborative scholarship and research
across traditional academic disciplines, Clarkson faculty and staff have
been at the forefront of addressing societal challenges and preparing
graduates to achieve extraordinary professional success for over 100
years.
The Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity Initiatives
(AVP) is responsible for initiatives that will promote an enhanced
presence of faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds within
the University's community. Reporting directly to the Vice President for
University Outreach and Student Affairs, the AVP serves on the
President's cabinet and numerous university committees and actively
collaborates with other University administrators and faculty. The AVP
is responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing
university-wide goals for diversity, providing leadership for pipeline
programs, consulting with campus constituencies, and coordinating a
comprehensive university approach to campus diversity. Assisting faculty
and staff in creating innovative programs designed to foster a climate
of advocacy for diversity on campus and to enhance the recruitment,
retention, and success for all members of the university is an important
priority. The AVP will provide supervision and leadership for relevant
federal, state, and local "pipeline" programs, as well as the offices of
Accommodative Services, International Student Advising, and Student
Support Services. Additionally, the AVP will develop articulation
strategies and agreements with community colleges and other
institutions-including corporations, government agencies, and
foundations-that will encourage funding for educational programs,
student scholarships, and fellowships for underrepresented students in
science, mathematics, engineering and technology.
Master's degree required with a minimum of five years of demonstrated
leadership experience addressing diversity initiatives, preferably
within a higher education setting. Must possess a broad understanding
and commitment to equity issues and the development of initiatives to
foster a more diverse and inclusive campus community. A collaborative
approach to facilitating change coupled with demonstrated ability to
work within a decentralized academic system and evidence of strong
relationship-building abilities needed to work effectively with internal
and external communities are essential for success. Additionally, an
ability to consult with faculty on relevant curricular issues; a record
of achievement, leadership, and managerial skills; evidence of strong
organizational ability and excellent writing and speaking skills; and
the interpersonal skills for facilitating consensus and communication
across a wide range of campus constituencies and personnel will be
important in the selection of the next AVP.
Review of applications will begin on September 14, 2007, and will
continue until the position is filled. A resume with an accompanying
cover letter may be submitted via the SJG website at
