(NAME-MCE) Name-mce Digest, Vol 507, Issue 1 -Race VS Gender

Jamie-

I think the comment, "Never judge a book by its cover!" is a great
statement that should be seen in all classrooms. No matter how
"seasoned" a teacher is, we look at each student as they come in and
prejudge them. It is very easy to continue the stereotyping of male
vs. female expectations but we need to look at each student, and
encourage them, to pursue their true interests. I see a lot of
stereotyping in math and science classes. There are definitely boys
that really don't get those subjects and girls that just eat it up.
It is hard to change stereotyping because it has been such a natural
progression in our history. If we try to change these expectations
one at a time, we are going to be making a difference. We may not see
immediate results but we are exposing them to different concepts and
they can decide what they are going to do.
