IN AFTERMATH OF IMUS, ADL OFFERS RESOURCES
FOR CHALLENGING BIGOTED LANGUAGE
New York, NY, April 24, 2007 … In the aftermath of the firing of talk show
icon Don Imus for racist comments and other recent episodes where public
figures have uttered anti-Semitic, racist or bigoted remarks, the Anti-Defamation
League (ADL) has compiled a series of educational resources for challenging
biased language and exploring the roots of prejudice in everyday life.
“What Did You Just Say?”, a new feature on the League’s Web site at
_www.adl.org/education_ (http://www.adl.org/education) , presents materials for
countering the harmful effects of biased or bigoted language in schools,
communities and the workplace. Produced by the League’s acclaimed A WORLD OF
DIFFERENCE® Institute, a leading provider of anti-bias training and education
programs, the materials include resources that can help individuals explore the
roots of prejudice, and learn how to respond when confronted with bigoted
speech.
“The Imus affair was a reminder of the power of words – bigoted words,
hateful words -- and their ability to inflict harm on real people,” said Abraham
H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “In the aftermath of Imus’ remarks,
people have asked us for suggestions on how they might respond when they hear
words, jokes or phrases that demean, ridicule or demonstrate ignorance. There
are no easy answers, but it begins with the recognition that biased words can
be extremely hurtful and deeply offensive.”
ADL’s resource “What Did You Just Say?”: Challenging Biased Language
includes:
    * Strategies for responding effectively to bigoted words, jokes and
slurs
    * Guidelines for examining one’s own biases, attitudes and behaviors
    * Suggestions for achieving bias-free communication
    * Activities and curricular resources for educators
ADL is a leading provider of anti-bias education and diversity training
programs that help create and sustain inclusive home, school, community and work
environments. The League’s A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute provides
anti-bias training programs to schools, universities, corporations and
community-based organizations throughout the United States and abroad.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world’s leading
organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract
hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
