Professional Opportunity: Upper School Chemistry/Mathematics Teacher 07-08
Lakeside School is an independent coeducational day school offering a broad curriculum in the liberal arts. Founded in 1919, the school enrolls 776 students in grades 5 through 12 from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds.
The mission of Lakeside School is to develop in intellectually capable young people the creative minds, healthy bodies, and ethical spirits needed to contribute wisdom, compassion, and leadership to a global society. We provide a rigorous, dynamic academic program through which effective educators lead students to take responsibility for learning. We are committed to sustaining a school in which individuals representing diverse cultures and experiences instruct one another in the meaning and value of community and in the joy and importance of lifelong learning.
This position will be a full-time, regular faculty appointment, starting in late August 2007. This position will require sitting, standing, walking to other parts of campus, and repetitive computer work.
Responsibilities. The Upper School chemistry/mathematics teacher will have primary responsibility for teaching some combination of four sections of high-school chemistry and math. The specific teaching assignment will be based on Upper School Science and Math Department needs (based on student sign-ups) and the teacher's preferences and training. Science instruction at Lakeside demands a considerable degree of laboratory experimentation and computer literacy; incorporation of technology into the curriculum is a school-wide goal supported by a 7-12 student laptop program. Essential duties will include (1) classroom instruction; (2) conferences with students and colleagues; (3) active participation in the work of the department(s) on curriculum development and pedagogy; (4) acting as an academic adviser to a group of students; and (5) assuming at least one additional duty as a faculty member (advising a student club, joining a standing committee, and the like).
Qualifications. The successful applicant will have a bachelor's degree (BA or BS) in chemistry, ideally with a minor in mathematics. We encourage candidates with degrees in any of the physical sciences to apply, as long as coursework includes extensive, strong grounding in chemistry to support a broad understanding of the sciences applicable to a high-school setting. Either a master's degree in science or considerable high-school teaching experience at the AP level is required; candidates with the master's degree as well as AP teaching experience will be preferred. In any event, applicants must have experience in teaching high-school-aged students or freshman- and sophomore-level college students. Familiarity with computers and graphing calculators and their use in science and mathematics instruction is essential (PC/ Windows platform). References should speak to the candidate's eagerness and enthusiasm in working effectively with capable young people at this level, and to his or her ability to work harmoniously and competently with adult colleagues.
Salary/Benefits. Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding employees through a compensation plan that compares favorably with those of peer schools both locally and nationwide. Individual salary levels-negotiable depending on education and experience-are very competitive. A full benefits package includes TIAA/CREF retirement and generous medical/dental coverage, and equals the best plans in private industry.
Application Process. Applicants should call 206/440-2763 to request an application form or download a form from the Lakeside School web site (www.lakesideschool.org), and should submit this with a resumé to: Lakeside School Employment, Lakeside School, 14050 First Avenue NE, Seattle, Washington, 98125-3099.
