Dear Equity, Diversity, Multicultural, Bilingual, Social Justice, Activist Colleagues,

I am writing to make you aware of the situation at Gallaudet University. Our Gallaudet faculty, staff, and student colleagues are fighting for things we take very much for granted on many of our campuses--shared governance, academic freedom, the right to peaceful dissent, and, most importantly, democratic leadership.

Right now there is a great need for mediators, conflict negotiators, and dispute resolution experts to help bring about a solution. These experts should have a social justice framework, knowledge about the Deaf community, and, ideally, be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).

There is also a great need for folks across academic disciplines to help faculty organize and execute "teach-ins" in their content areas on the Gallaudet campus. Students have asked faculty to suspend classes as a show of support for their protest. Many faculty are interested in taking advantage of the student activism in a way that is subject specific so that education can continue.

For more information as well as to make financial contributions (to feed the protesters, pay bail, hire mediators, cover the cost of everyday living supplies, reproduce informative publications for the media and external stakeholders, pay sign language interpreters, etc.), please visit the Gallaudet Faculty, Student, Staff Association website at:

To offer your assistance please contact Dr. Cheryl Wu at cheryllwu at aol.com.

In solidarity,

Christine
