We have been somewhat successful with a Saturday Academy, which offers
half-day of school (academic support & counseling on Saturday following
a "suspendable"
offense). We are still collecting data to determine how much of a
deterrent it truly is, however, unless the offense is a serious
violation, this seems to work better for students who look forward to
the "vacation" and most of whom are already in serious trouble
academically. Many times these students have no adult supervision
during a traditional suspension, and while we always send work home,
often little is completed. This process keeps students in school and
supervised, and most importantly, safe. Most adolescents loathe giving
up their Saturdays to have to return to school and are better able to be
"reached" in a small group setting, as opposed to having the audience
that a regular school day brings.

Subject: reducing the drop-out and suspension rates for those students
at risk of dropping out or
I am working on a project to "review programs in other states for their
effectiveness in reducing the drop-out and suspension rates for those
students at risk of dropping out or being suspended from school."
Any advice, leads, contacts, data, research, reports, recommended model
programs would be much appreciated.
