Call for manuscripts for a peer-reviewed book: African Americans and
Community Engagement in Higher Education: Perspectives of Race in
Community Service, Service-Learning, and Community Based Research.
Editors: Stephanie Evans (University of Florida), Colette Taylor
(Middle Tennessee State University), Michelle Dunlap (Connecticut
College), and DeMond Miller (Rowan University); Introduction, Donald
Blake (University of Virginia).
African Americans and Community Engagement (AACE) discusses race and
its roles in university-community partnerships. This edited volume will
allow students, agency staff, community constituents, faculty, and
campus administrators an opportunity to reflect and redefine what
impact African American identity, both in the academy and in the
community, has on various forms of community engagement. The co-editors
are all faculty members and administrators who are experienced in
community service, service-learning, and community based research. We
feel that this text will connect historic and contemporary ideas of
"service" and encourage a more informed approach from African American
and non-African American change agents. From historic concepts of "race
uplift," to contemporary debates about racialized perceptions of
need, and service efforts in Hurricane Katrina, African American
identity offers a cogent platform to encourage the difficult (yet
much-needed) inclusion of race in dialogues of national service and
community engagement. Social change can happen more effectively through
critically discussing assumptions, expectations, experiences, and
perspectives that emerge when placing race at the center of town-gown
communication and practice.
Chapter proposals about civic engagement within the context of
university-community partnerships and its impacts in the African
American community are being accepted in the following three areas
(please indicate which area your chapter would fall under):
Community Service (and Volunteerism)
Service-Learning
Community Based Research
