Position: Dean, College of Education 

Responsibilities: The Dean is the chief academic, fiscal, and
administrative officer of the College, and reports directly to the
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. She/he provides
leadership to the faculty and staff in all matters relating to
curriculum and program development; accreditation, assessment and
evaluation; recruitment and retention of faculty, staff and students;
and research, scholarship and grant-seeking. The Dean will collaborate
with the deans of the other schools and coordinate efforts regarding the
preparation of teachers and school administrators. The Dean will
actively engage in fundraising for the College in concert with the
Division of Institutional Advancement. She/he represents the College to
the higher administration, students, alumni, and external constituents.
The College of Education administers the education components of the
University's teacher education programs and related certifications and
endorsements. The College offers undergraduate teacher certification
programs in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary
Education, and Special Education, and graduate programs in Elementary
Education, Educational Leadership, Reading, Counseling Services, and
Special Education. Over 40 full-time faculty members teach in the
College's four departments, Educational Leadership, Elementary and Early
Childhood Education, Secondary and Middle School Education, and Special
Education and Counseling. The College also houses the Offices of Field
Experiences and Certification. The College was recently re-accredited by
the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE); the
graduate counseling program is accredited by the Council on
Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
The faculty in the College of Education play a leadership role in the
improvement of teacher education in the communities surrounding the
university and the state. The recipient of several state and local
grants, the College of Education is part of the New Jersey Consortium
for Urban Education, the New Jersey Teacher Quality Enhancement Program,
and Paterson Teachers for Tomorrow. These programs link the University
with corporate and non-profit partners to improve instruction in the
state's public schools, particularly high need districts. The Dean will
provide leadership in implementing new modes of innovative instruction
for prospective teachers and build on the University's 151-year heritage
as a leader in teacher education for the state. 

Qualifications: Requirements for this position include a doctorate from
an accredited institution in a field represented in the College or
related discipline; commitment to academic excellence and the ability to
develop, articulate, and accomplish a constructive vision for the
College in cooperation with faculty; at least five years of full-time
teaching experience in a four-year college or university, preferably in
teacher education, with a strong record of scholarship and service
commensurate with appointment at the rank of professor at the
University; at least five years of successful administrative experience
in higher education at the level of department chair or higher;
experience in maintaining NCATE accreditation; strong commitment to the
use of technology in teaching and learning; strong commitment to and
experience with diversity issues in higher education; a leadership style
that fosters team-building and inclusive working relationships with
members of the University community; and excellent communication and
interpersonal skills with proven ability to work collaboratively with
faculty, students, staff, and other administrators and community/school
partners. Experience in a collective bargaining environment is helpful. 

Education: Doctorate from an accredited institution in a field
represented in the College or related discipline
