Assistant Professor, English Education

The Virginia Tech School of Education is in its third year of a major 
recruitment initiative designed to build our capacity for excellence 
in research, teaching, and high-impact outreach. In the tradition of 
a land-grant, research-extensive university, we seek scholars who are 
dedicated to quality research and making a visible contribution to 
the lives of our constituents through inquiry, leadership and 
advocacy.

Located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia Tech is the 
state's largest residential university with over 27,000 students. The 
School of Education faculty of 72 currently offers 25 programs to

Position: Assistant Professor, English Education (posting #061261) 
This position is a full-time, tenure track, academic year 
appointment, with a starting date of August 10, 2007.

Position Responsibilities: Engage in research, advising, teaching, 
and service as commensurate with a major research university; 
establish a strong research program in English Education; teach 
secondary English methods courses and offer coursework in teaching 
writing and adolescent literature; integrate instructional technology 
within their teaching; work with students in field placements; 
supervise students with field-based research at the graduate level; 
participate in outreach with local communities and schools; and 
develop/maintain an active role within the state and national English 
Education professional organizations.

Required Qualifications: Earned doctorate in English education or 
related field by date of appointment, secondary-level English 
teaching experience, and the demonstrated potential of significant 
scholarly research in the study of English.

Preferred Qualifications: We are especially interested in candidates 
who demonstrate the best combination of the following: research 
experience in urban settings and K-12 schools; research interests and 
experiences with diverse and minority populations; scholarly emphasis 
on socio-cultural-historical approaches to inquiry; excellence in 
teaching; experience in utilizing digital technologies to support the 
teaching of English; and a commitment to collegiality and 
collaboration.
