Teacher Pathways Program

Information: http://www.lane.k12.or.us/teacherpathways/index.html

Established in 2006 to address the shortage of minority teachers, the
Teacher Pathways Program (TPP) is a collaborative partnership among Bethel,
Eugene and Springfield School Districts; Lane Education Service District;
Lane Community College; Northwest Christian College; Pacific University; and
University of Oregon. Each partnering agency has committed funding, staffing
and other resources to support licensure of qualified bilingual/bicultural
members of our community.

Our goal is to diversify the teaching force in our region to reflect the
students in our public schools. We will recruit minority candidates
committed to employing research-based practices, incorporating different
learning styles and cultural perspectives in their teaching and maintaining
visions of social justice and equity.
Why do we need the Teacher Pathways Program?

The program is a response to the 1991 Minority Teacher Act, ORS 342.437,
which states:

The State of Oregon is committed to ethnic-racial equity and, therefore, it
is the goal of the State that by the year 2001 the number of minority
teachers, including administrators, employed by school districts and
education service districts shall be approximately proportionate to the
number of minority children enrolled in the public schools of this State.
[1991 c.434 § 2]

The target year for this goal was 2001. We have not yet met this goal. The
Bethel, Eugene and Springfield School Districts will only meet this goal
through partnerships and coordinated efforts to recruit, support and train
minority teachers.
