WOCN National Survey for Advocates and Activists of Color
Women of Color Network (WOCN), a national project providing technical
assistance, support, resources, and leadership training to Women of Color
since 1997, is conducting a national survey to enhance our understanding of
the experiences, treatment, and overall status of advocates, activists, and
specialists of color working and serving to end violence against women and
families. All individual responses will be anonymous and confidential. This
survey will be conducted from December 2006 through January 21st, with a
plan of presenting the results in mid-year 2007.
There has been enough testimony and calls for assistance over the years from
women of color across the country for staff, mentors and advisors of WOCN to
conclude that there are significant problems related to race/ethnicity
within the work to end violence against women. The primary goal of this
survey is to determine the scope of the problem and the level of support
received by women of color advocates from their programs to actively discuss
and address the unique factors that exist in serving communities of color.
Another goal of the survey is to compare the experiences of those working
within or under the auspices of mainstream organizations to the experiences
of those working within ethnically/racially specific organizations.
Finally, we hope to begin capturing from this data some detail regarding
what is working well in programs (which will be further examined in future
WOCN research). Those completing this survey should identify as Native/First
Nations, Latina/Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, African/African
American, and/or bi-/multi-racial on a daily basis.
We estimate this survey will take 30 minutes of your time. Some of the
questions may evoke strong feelings for you. If this occurs, we encourage
you to take a break from the survey and consider speaking either with
someone close to you, a colleague or contacting us at 800-537-2238, ext. 137
for
support.
We thank you for your time and willingness to share your experience with us
in this survey and for your assistance in accomplishing this national
endeavor.
