Open Position: Senior Research Associate

Reports to: Research Director

Objective: Work collaboratively with members of GLSEN's Research
Department in all areas of GLSEN's research program. The department
conducts original research that demonstrates the educational impact of
anti-LGBT bias and harassment and that evaluates the efficacy of GLSEN's
recommended interventions, conducts evaluation research regarding
GLSEN's programs and educational resources and produces up-to-date,
research-based publications that support the organization's policy and
programmatic work.

Responsibilities:

A. Managing research projects.

* Manage a number of GLSEN's current research projects, including
original research related to LGBT issues in education as well as
research summaries based on existing literature.
 * Collaborate with GLSEN's Research Associate on evaluation research
projects.
 * Oversee the work of contract researchers and volunteers.
 * Develop and maintain subject databases.
 * Conduct research interviews and focus groups.
 * Create and maintain data sets.
 * Recruit and track research participants.

B. Develop and design of new research.

* Perform literature reviews and library research.
* Design research studies and data analysis plans.
* Assist in identifying funding opportunities for research and in
writing of grant proposals.

C. Assist with preparation and presentation of GLSEN's research findings
and summaries of other relevant research for internal and external
audiences.

* Analyze data and write up research findings and conclusions for
publication as reports and white papers for GLSEN constituents,
educators and education policymakers.
* Prepare and deliver presentations on research findings for academic
and practitioner audiences.
* Organize and graph study results as needed.
* Participate in presentations to internal audiences and/or public
speaking engagements.
* Participate in developing, updating, and maintaining a knowledge base
of the current social science literature regarding issues of sexual
orientation, gender and gender identity/expression in education.

D. Provide technical assistance to GLSEN staff and key organizational
allies to promote GLSEN's efforts to achieve policy and programmatic
improvements on LGBT issues in K-12 schools.

* Respond to external requests for information about GLSEN's research
and to other research questions regarding LGBT issues and education.
* Respond to internal requests for research results and statistical
information of use to GLSEN's communications, policy, education and
student organizing efforts.
* Provide leadership and support to GLSEN chapter members who are
conducting research to develop rigorous research designs, employ
appropriate methodology and recruit sites for research.
* Provide technical research assistance to outside partner organizations
* Other duties as assigned.

Required skills:

* Master's degree in Psychology, Social Sciences, Social Work, Education
or related field or BA in related field plus 5 years experience, PhD
preferred.
* Experience conducting quantitative research and statistical analysis
as well as experience with qualitative research.
* Strong knowledge of multivariate statistics using SPSS for analysis.
* Familiarity with LGBT issues in education.
* Familiarity with educational research and research methods and program
evaluation.
* Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
* Ability to adapt and translate academic studies and research for lay
audiences.
* Organizational skills and ability to work as part of a team.
* Attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
* Commitment to GLSEN's mission and goals.
